TISSINGTON SOLDIER KILLED News has been received of the death in action of Private Leonard Berrisford, son of the late Mr. Isaac Berrisford, and of Mrs. Berrisford, of the Shaw Farm, Tissington. His death occurred on his 22nd birthday, the 1st of March, and was due to the bursting of a shell over the top of the trench in which he had been on duty for about two hours. His last letter was written on Feb. 27th, and stated that he was quite well, and that he hoped to be home again shortly. Mrs. Berrisford received the sad news on Saturday last, when the following letter from her son's sergeant came to hand:- “I am sorry to inform you that your son, Leonard, was wounded on February 28th about midnight, and passed away quite peacefully just about one o'clock the next morning. I am glad to say he did not suffer much, but passed away quietly, not saying a word to anyone. He was respected by all in his company, and also by his officers. I can assure you we grieve his loss very much, and feel as though we had lost a brother. He was a brave lad, and died at his post. No. 3 Platoon will miss him very much, he was so well liked by all who knew him, and they all wish to express their sympathy with the family in your sad bereavement.” Return to the memorial
